Expansion News and Building Fund

Expansion News
July 2008
On Monday, July 21st the Huber Heights City Council entered a contract for the design of
our building addition with Brightman & Mitchell Architects, Inc. at a cost not to exceed
$31,200. (See July 23rd Huber Heights Courier for full details.) Also, the grant was
recently approved for the parking lot expansion.
June 2008
On our road to getting the extension completed, the speed bump we encountered has
become a bit higher. The revision of the specs to solicit bids from architects has taken a bit
longer than we had hoped. It was scheduled to go out on May 9. Afterward, architects will
have two weeks to respond. Once an architect is chosen, time will be needed to prepare
the drawings and so on. All of this means that it will be at least a few more months before
actual construction will start. Currently our hope is that we can have everything covered
and enclosed before winter.
Once this expansion is completed, there will be a greater need for additional parking
spaces, which is why our city is applying for a Community Development Block Grant to
expand the lot. If you recall, last year an unsuccessful application was made to obtain funds
for our building expansion. Since the amount needed this time is much less, we are hoping
for better luck with this application.
May 2008
The first time the city wrote up the specifications for an architect, only one proposal was
submitted. The specs have been changed and we expect additional architects will now
submit proposals. These do not affect the actual construction of our addition, but centered
on administration of our construction. Unfortunately, this may push back the start of
construction by a month or so.
April 2008
Our building expansion continues to move right along. The proposal from the architect was
due on March 13.
January 2008
WOW! The year 2008 will be a great one for the Huber Senior Center. Construction will
begin on the 28% expansion to our center, and, with any kind of luck, finish in 2008.
According to Huber Heights Assistant City Manager, Jim Bowers, construction should begin
just as soon as the weather improves. He announced at our General Membership meeting,
in December, that the Huber Heights City Council is not only putting in its budget for 2008
the same $50,000 that was allocated last year if a grant was obtained, it also is providing
an additional total of $300,000 for our expansion plans. The city only is asking our center to
pay $25,000 for the architect’s final plans. After Jim had made his presentation at our
meeting, someone in the back commented that he could not hear what Jim had to say. Jim
summarized his presentation by simply saying, “You get the money.” What better news
could our center receive?
Jim also told us that next year the city plans to apply for a Community Development Block
Grant to improve our parking lot and purchase furniture for our expanded center. Let us all
hope that this application will be successful. Don’t forget that the plans for our expansion
are posted on the wall in our center. Check them over to see what great things will happen
this year. (Bill Wright, President)
